WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990 to ensure the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, today marks the 28th anniversary of the signing of the ADA, which expanded access and opportunities for people with disabilities; and
Recognizing the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
DDS leads the District’s CoP in CLC where we come together on an ongoing basis to share ideas, provide technical assistance and support among peers, and discuss solutions to shared challenges in embedding cultural and linguistic competence principles and practices within the intellectual and developmental disabilities system.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a public proclamation that the month of March should be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to “increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.” The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) combine their skills and talents to create a public campaign that:
