DC Supporting Families Community of Practice

The DC Supporting Families Community of Practice (SF CoP) is a group of family members, advocates with disabilities, government leaders, disability advocacy and services professionals, and other interested community members who are thinking together about how to create policies, practices and systems that better support families that include a member with an intellectual or developmental disability across the life course.  The DC SF CoP is part of a National Community of Practice for Supporting Familiar of Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities that is supported by University of Missouri Kansas City Institute for Human Development and The National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services.

Current Activities:

Your Priorities Drive Our Work! Share your priorities in our Family Survey by clicking this link for English and this link for Spanish.

We want your feedback on your priorities so that we can focus on things that are most important to you.  We also want to learn how best to communicate with you.

We will use the information that you share with us to:

1) Plan engagement events to share information including discussions about the areas that are highest priority to DC families
2) Identify areas where we need to increase partnerships and collaboration to address the priorities of families
3) Join the SF CoP for the Reality of the Caregiver Experience Series during the Spring and Fall of 2024

The purpose of the series is to:

1) Engage with families of people with ID, DD and other disabilities.
2) Raise awareness of the needs of caregivers across the lifespan. Share resources.
3) Discuss strategies and recommendations with policy makers and the community.

May 2024 we hosted Part 1-A Screening of the Documentary “Unseen”
June 2024 we hosted Part 2-Caregiver Self Care: Acknowledging Your Needs and Making It Work for You and Your Family
Dates for fall events will be announced in late summer 2024.
