Who is involved in the Committee?
MCPD members represent persons with disabilities from local and national advocacy organizations, service providers, business leaders, local and federal governments, as well as consumers. Over 50 associates are a part of the Mayor’s Committee membership.
What does the Committee do?
Concerned with advocacy issues related to an inclusive delivery system and quality customer service, the Mayor’s Committee presents testimony before the DC City Council and other legislative entities, as well as explores and promotes assistive technology, which aid people with disabilities. The Committee also works in partnership with foundations and community groups to empower persons with disabilities. MCPD is an information and referral entity, which aids a consumer in leading a more productive and independent life.
One of the major roles of the Committee, is to conduct community outreach activities designed to heighten awareness and sensitize the general public of disability issues. Through public relation campaigns, special events and correspondence, MCPD accomplishes its goals of heightening the awareness, reforming and contributing in the development of policy and regulations of people with disabilities.
