Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI)

SSI provides cash assistance to eligible financially needy individuals who are aged 65 or older, blind or have disabilities. To be eligible to receive SSI benefits, individuals must have little personal income or resources.  This provision is at a basic subsistence level, with individual benefits currently equivalent to 73 percent of the poverty level. Thus, the Division provides one of the most significant services for persons with disabilities in the District. The sub-populations served by the agency are persons with disabilities and those critically in need of care and support. This population is inclusive of children at risk for developmental delay and disabilities, the terminally ill, the mentally ill, the homeless, persons with HIV/AIDS, and other persons who have limited income and/or are below the poverty line.
