In the District of Columbia two major programs within the Social Security Administration (SSA) are administered through the Rehabilitation Services Administration, Disability Determination Division (DDD).
The two programs are:

Through these two programs, the DDD receives claims from the four SSA Field Offices in the District to evaluate and to determine the disability status of applicants who are District residents applying for SSA benefits.

The Disability Determination Division (DDD), in meeting its expectations, continues to experience increasing stress as a result of challenges to processing an ever-increasing workload from year-to-year. Actual services level is projected to increase further for subsequent years as a reflection of the size and growth of the workloads, as it is for other similar programs in the nation.

As in the District of Columbia, the Social Security Administration is currently investing substantially in all programs nationwide, to modernize the computer system infrastructure, and to provide customer-initiated services electronically through the Internet. This will allow for the establishment of a paperless and image-based workflow management system, improved accuracy and mean processing time.

The operations and performance standard of the DDD is monitored by SSA for accuracy, overall processing time, productivity and costs per case. Major objectives within DDD is to ensure that disabliity claims adjudication are conducted accurately and consistently with established rules and regulations and to provide timely and responsive customer service to District residents.
